Okay on the graphics card, I've had a little fiddling to do with Suse Distros in the past as it mis-set the screen-size and resolution so I ended up with a desktop bigger than my screen, but I've never come across a printer problem quite like the one you describe. Are you sure you weren't set on Letter while using A4 paper?
