Another reason to not go with a journaling filesystem is that you can't use noflushd to spin down IDE hard disks to reduce noise and power.
For a personal computer, is the extra time waiting for a fsck to complete after a crash really such a big deal? My Linux installations rarely crash, anyway.
In the case of a notebook, avoiding use of hard disk space by journals and conserving power will be more important issues.
