Whilst its still a bit rough arround the edges LDE can help with deleted files. It will now compile on Redhat 8.0 and beyond if you follow the patch I put into the help section on sourceforge. The patch will go into the CVS soon I promise but I am relocatng at present.
If you are game and compile with my alpha code included you get a nice view of all those files you forgot to backup and deleted by mistake.
It was designed for ext2fs should work with ext3fs - but this has not been tested. Work with a copy of the disk you are tring to recover. Another thing I added to LDE was the ability to copy a file that was deleted to another mounted fs. Which is nice and safe for the damaged disk and you get your file back. I copied deleted files from a drive to a smb mounted share once.
