I have to agree with you on the GUI as required bit. Why is it that everytime someone thinks an OS needs to be redesigned from the ground up one of the first things they want to do is get rid of the CLI as the basis for the OS?
You don't like the CLI? Fine don't run the CLI...
One of the reasons MS OS's tend to be unstable is because of the GUI being so tightly coupled into the kernel. While I can't say older Mac OS's are the same way, I know for certain that one of the few things that crashes on a at all for me are video drivers under Linux. I hate the idea of having to be restarting my OS cause the video driver couldn't reinitialize itself properly and took my OS down.
