In the earlier version of StarOffice there was a function called Multiple.Operations which could perform multivariate solving. I could not find it in the latest version (have they renamed it?). I found the capability equivalent to the solver in MS Excel.
Interesting thing is that I can't find documentation for Multiple.Operations in OpenOffice.org but it seems to work for me in Openoffice1.1! -M
