after using MS Office (and the individual predecessor programs) for the past ~10 years, i have to admit that i've never seen or heard of a way to get the drop-down menus to stay open when you move the cursor off them, much less be able to drag them somewhere else on the screen and pin them there for later use.

since MS now has a WYSIWYG display for documents (but not spreadsheets), this is probably the feature i miss most about GeoWorks -- circa 1985, ported to DR-DOS (or MS-DOS if you had to) from the Commodore 64. that was the first integrated "office suite" (word processor, drawing package, spreadsheet, with an attached but not really integrated data base) that i remember. i used it until ~1992 because it was so much more reliable and capable than Word or WordPerfect.
