I guess the German article did not emphasise GNOME because in Germany KDE is a lot more popular (some of the main developers of KDE are from Germany, aren't they?). Also SuSE, the most popular distro in Germany, always used to be a KDE distribution. When I still used SuSE (now Debian), the GNOME setup used to be very bare as compared to a full featured and nicely configured KDE desktop. So most users would stick with the default, KDE.
