Amanda

I use Amanda (www.amanda.org), an open-source backup system to do backups to tape. The host is an ancient Linux box, and the clients are Linux, Windows, and MacOS X. Works great, and is bundled with Red Hat too. Amanda uses Samba to access Windows shared partitions, and uses its own client-server techniques for *nix machines. Data is streamed to holding drives on the backup server, then dumped to tape efficiently. Amanda supports a variety of tape drives, including multi-tape robots. I'd recommend it.
