and it's also its age that makes OpenOffice so complete. It's got an enormous head-start in terms of functionality.

Yup.

Personally I am amazed at how complete OOo is. Much more that people realize -- because they look at it from an MS Office prism, they miss all the ways in which OOo is superior to MS.

On version 2.0 OOo will use Gtk on GNU/Linux and there will probably be a Qt version later on as well.

But through a compatibility layer, isn't it?

Yes, correct. Otherwise we would lose some things:

    * Wouldn't be able to use Aqua on Mac.

    * Wouldn't be able to use Qt on Linux because Qt is not free for Windows.

    * Gtk is not as good on Mac and Windows.

So it kind of makes sense to use whichever the native toolkit of each platform is. But this means that you need an in-between layer.

raster image editor

A *raster* image editor? Have you tried GIMP? (joke)

Seriously though, we want to avoid duplicating work that others have done well. Instead, we try to integrate with existing apps.

So I will mentally replace your suggestion with "integrate with GIMP". :-) Yes, that would be a good idea.

As a side note: an old version of StarOffice *did* have a raster image editor. But they found that it was a lot of work, not very good, and added little to the package. So they dropped it.

But just because it didn't work last time doesn't mean it can't work ever. I think GIMP integration is the way to go. I love GIMP.

As for a flow-charter, I heard someone suggest that once before. It should be doable with the vector-graphics infrasctructure we already have.

Thank you for your thoughts. I appreciate the constructive criticism.

Cheers,
Daniel Carrera.
