Comparing Linux (or a Linux distribution) to Windows, with respect to hardware, is bad logic.
Windows doesn't recognize many devices, it relies on the device manufacturers to provide drivers.
Those manufacturers can't always be bothered to develop Linux drivers, which means that its up to the Open Source community to spend their time writing them from scratch.
If you have taken the time to complain here, why not complain to the manufacturers of your scanner, modem and printer, ask them why they can't provide drivers for Linux, or at least make it easier for the Open Source community to write them?
One further note:
People that use the term 'Linux Zealots' flippantly are starting to be perceived as ignorant, pro-Microsoft, anti-Linux, FUD stirring types; or should I say "Microsoft Zealots". It's probably wise not to use it if you don't want to come across in this way.
