I suggest trying Suse or Xandros, both of which have free download versions now. They seem to do about the best job of hardware detection and setup among the Linux distros: I just installed Xnadros on a dual boot system with W2K and Xandros was on the 'net "out of the box." We never managed to get W2K to recognize and use the NIC.
