at least OOo uses standard file formats that are/will be used as the defaults for KOffice. Now you get your documents, AND the ability to choose your tools too. Soooo, if you can't deal with the license deal between Sun and M$, but you still want to trade docs with OOo users, there are other options. In my opinion it will be the dominance of the file format, and not the dominance of OOo that will give M$ the greatest trouble.
The thing that M$ probably fears the most is that OOo and the Sun Star Office derivative will develop into a flawless conversion engine between their proprietary format and the standard reference file formats. That was one of the 2 primary goals for the OOo 2.0 drive(even before the settlement with M$). the other was to eliminate the startup wait and drastically reduce OOo's resource usage. Those features could severely impact the sales of M$ office.
I, for one, am willing to wait and see what happens. I like OOo, but I also know that there are other options if that doesn't work out. The worst thing we could do right now would be to throw all the office development talent into OOo, but that wouldn't likely happen anyway. The second worst thing would be to abandon OOo, as that would be an implied surrender to M$ without even putting up a fight. We need a heavyweight office platform. OOo meets that need. We need a middle weight office platform, KOffice is filling that need nicely, and we also need the truly light weight office platform.
