Really? I can't speak for others, but I usually don't care about "direct control over layout". Rather the opposite: I want to "just type" while LyX takes care of the layout without me having to bother.

Did you know that in LyX, you can just type LaTeX math commands into a math box (e.g. \int, \sqrt, \frac...), and symbols appear as you type? (To be exact, in order to see the symbol you must either start the next one or hit space, so that LyX knows that the command is finished.)
