You mean like<nobr> <wbr></nobr>/net/host/foobar with NFS or<nobr> <wbr></nobr>//host/mount with SMB?
The reason people don't like that (in particular in the UNIX world) is because encoding host names in paths is an administrative nightmare for a large site. DECNET was too simplistic in this area (as in many other areas).

There has been a lot of research in this area: CODA and Intermezzo, Plan9, user-mode file systems, etc. People just need to implement and use the research.
