I had a look at the alternatives to NFS...

...but wasn't impressed. Intermezzo seems to be an utterly dead project (I believe they author(s) are working for Lustre now) and Coda is just ridiculously complex to set up (and has some serious deficiencies).

What I like about NFS is that it's a) standard with *every* Linux/BSD/UNIX out there (so no messing with kernel rebuilds), b) it's very easy to set up and c) you can play around with automounting/rsync/soft-links to create a failover environment (I'll leave you to think about how you do that..).
