kafs will probably be fixed now that the proper infrastructure is there (fs-cache and in-kernel key-ring).
Sure, it could have been hacked together without those bits, but it would have been a an ugly hack.
But there are already two working AFS clients. If code needs to be written, it's not yet another AFS client, but rather a new distributed file system, like AFS, but better. AFS is very useful, but far from perfect.
