Thanks for the interesting and clear explanation. Frankly, I was afraid that some "Debian-purist" might flame me for suggesting that Mandrake can do a good job but you post gave me an insight which I wholly lacked before.
On substance, I note that having two versions of Python side by side minimizes not only breakage, but also disk space. I have not tried that, but my other concern would be that apps might get confused as to what version of Python to call. Are any of these concerns warranted?
