Without using TLS or LDAPS://(ldap over ssl) everything is in free text.
If your login password is "secret"... it goes on the network as s e c r e t in FREE OPEN TEXT for anyone to sniff.
Very, Very bad idea...its more insecure than NIS.
Do not deploy LDAP without using TLS or LDAPS://
