Create partitions for anything you want to control yourself during your initial install.<nobr> <wbr></nobr>/home,<nobr> <wbr></nobr>/opt, and<nobr> <wbr></nobr>/usr/local are obvious choices. When you do a new install, uncheck the box that says to format these partitions and you'll keep the old contents.
