my distro upgrade process

1) # apt-get dist-upgrade
2) (coffee break)
3) upgrade complete

I won't go into blow-by-blow details, as I don't think you want to hear them all again, but, really, I could not help but cite an immediate Debian solution to every single gripe you list in the article.

Debian has mastered the art of package management so well that it's barely a distribution any more - it's a base distro from which other distros build on. Linspire, Xandros, Knoppix (and it's boiundless progeny), Progeny, Ubuntu, Libranet... all these are based on Debian. Take your pick.
