I won't go into blow-by-blow details, as I don't think you want to hear them all again, but, really, I could not help but cite an immediate Debian solution to every single gripe you list in the article.
er... you can do all of this with redhat, or suse for that matter - install apt, and away you go. I've upgraded a number of redhat 8 or 9 boxes to fc1 like that, and many have upgraded suse 8 to suse 9 etc in the same way. Thanks for apt, debian, it was one thing you got right....
