Plenty have their own Linux distro. It would be interesting to see an overview of the smaller distros and what they stpecialize in. For example, The University of Michigan ™ has been rolling their own distro, called <A HREF="http://www.itd.umich.edu/umce/features/2004/linux.html" title="umich.edu">UMCE Linux</a umich.edu> to meet specific needs that weren't addressed by any of the existing Linux or BSD distros.
It's not that terribly hard to learn how to do and easy to show others how.
