I don't know why all the concern. Wouldn't it be realtively easy to encrypt this with stunnel?
Make the ldap.conf point to localhost, and tell stunnel to send that data to your AD server. Make sure stunnel gets started on every reboot, and now it should be encrypted whenever you log in.
