He does not mention whether processor specific optimizations where used. So saying he did is just speculation. He just mentions he used nptl. I agree more details about the options he used would be good.
It is my understanding that *BSD use ports which are similar to gentoo's portage and they also compile stuff from source. He can just as easilly enable processor specific optimizations (someone please correct me if I am wrong). So it seems to me that using gentoo is actually the fairest comparisson you can get against *BSD.
You are overestimating the improvements of compiling stuff for your processor . Normally it will give you around 2-5% if you are lucky. So even if he did use unfair optimizations, that would not change the benchmarks all that much.
