I will make one comment about this. (I don't know anything about gentoo) Recompiling twice isn't stupid if what he's recompiling is the compiler itself. The last time I updated gcc on Solaris, I recompiled it 3 times. I started out with gcc v272 and built gcc v295. The first generation gcc v295 that resulted from the build with v272 was one size. The second generation gcc v295 that I compiled from the first generation gcc v295 did not binary compare to the first generation gcc v295. The 3rd generation gcc v295 did compare identically to the second generation gcc v295.
