FreeBSD 5.3 is an architectural mess. The code base
has been unmercifully hacked into something
resembling a plate of spaghetti. It was Matt Dillon
who said as much when he left to form
<A HREF="http://www.dragonflybsd.org/" title="dragonflybsd.org">DragonFly</a dragonflybsd.org>.
Matt recognized the the FreeBSD SMP code had
become unmaintainable, and incomprehensible.
Almost all the big name talent has migrated away from
FreeBSD: Hubbard, Smith, Dillon, Dyson, Lambert.
No big names left.
