Depends on how you install software in FreeBSD. In much the same way that you can get binary packages for Gentoo, so can you for FreeBSD. I suspect it's much more likely that the FreeBSD was installed from compiled packages because if you choose to install something during installation or from a nice graphical installation after installation it will get a precompiled package. So the "normal" routine is probably more balanced to packages, while the "normal" routine for Gentoo is decidedly compile yourself.
