remember root over nfs? another old solution...
this means beerier "clients" but has many of the administrative advantages. sound and local storage (your usb stick if this is a library for example) are easy (they being local and all) movies, flash etc. play just fine (i have used flash over X11, its usually not bad over 100mbs)
if you really want performance, load / and some other directories into ram. sure booting might take awhile (havent tried this yet), but other than that this should be pretty sweet.
one studio (dont remember which) kept all thier workstations in the machine room with very long kvm cables to everyones desks, and, i think, serial cables plugged into them for the admins use (these were all running irix) not completely related, but thought it was neat, and this remembed me of it.
