The thin client runs an X server, the app server runs X clients, and the X clients running on the app server display on the X server running on the thin client. All renedering is done by the X client, which is running on the App server, and the X server only displays bitmaped graphics (well not quite, but close enough, any rendering other than that is done by the video card) The window manager or desktop environment are X clients, and as such they are run from the app server. So basicly there's no difference based on the power of the thin client, because all it runs is the X server.
