Amen. With Microsoft backup solutions, I'm locked in to Windows and only Windows, and furthermore, it's usually *that product* on Windows and only *that product* on Windows. BackupExec and ARCserve are two notorious examples of this.

On the other hand, with GNU/Linux or Free/Net/OpenBSD, I can use tar -cvf or dump, walk over to *any* UNIX-like box, and do a tar -xvf or restore. About four years ago, I had to restore a GNU/Linux-made tape backup (hardware issue; the hard disk went kaput) on a Solaris box. With some help from the Solaris admin, we got it done, the original server was rebuilt with the data copied back over, and we were back in business within a few hours.

*That* convinced me, right there, of the business case for Free Software.
