You are missing something. Namely, Sun is more interested in adding "features" than in fixing bugs. Just go and read up about bugs in Sun's implementation of it's JVM and you could see that Sun has not fixed a lot of bugs (which have been around a long time). This includes the memory leak bugs... which are serious enough to cause crashes.
Therefore, a clean room implementation without those serious (crashes etc...) bugs will be welcomed by many.
