If you want to use Java on a platform like PowerPC Linux, one of the BSDs, or would just like it well integrated with your system then the current licensing sucks. Sun wouldn't even have to Open Source Java; they simply refuse to make it simple for third parties to have native well integrated installers. One almost always has to download an installer and jump through some hoops to get it working well. I think it is a pity that an effort like this is needed to solve such a simple issue.

Of course, Java has to run competently on your platform in the first place. The only decent Java for PowerPC Linux is IBM's and they make you jump through even more hoops to get it. Once you're done, you still lack a browser plugin. I shudder to think what other arches have to go through.

Ideology my ass. There are serious practical problems with Java as it stands. The problems are especially ironic for a language that once promised Write Once Run Anywhere. Sun doesn't tout that much anymore yet still insists only their enlighted stewardship will keep Java Pure. Ptoooey!
