It doesn't matter until you tell normal users they need version X.Y.Z to run your software. Or someone else depends on your software and needs to tell their users what release to use.
Then normal users have to figure out: Is the version I have compatible? New enough? If I upgrade a dependency will it break?
Version numbers matter in the same way that knowing what inputs your TV has before buying your new VCR. It matters in the same way as knowing what the make and model of your car is before you buy an oil filter.
