The DSL thing just changed here in the US, they're deregulating it a tad and infrastructure owners aren't required to share the lines with other companies anymore.
This was just in the past few weeks so it's easy to have missed it, but that does knock off the main DSL advantage you mentioned.
Luckily there's still DSL vs. Cable competition, and eventually there might be broadband over power lines to liven things up.
