I'm a linux weenie and also a citrix admin, among other things you don't care about. I've tested freenx/nx and it does work great for profiled rdp.
The thing is, since Microsoft is going to make a move to engulf Citrix 4 years from now(citrix has a 5 year contract with them), Citrix is making a move into Linux servers now. The writing has been on the wall for a long time, and Citrix knows it. So the push began a few months ago.
In any case, the point is that nx will be getting some competition in about a years time. The most glaring disadvantage of the commercial nx package in comparison to Citrix is nFuse web login and application launching. You login. The plugin is loaded into your browser, and it launches a 128 bti encryption app or desktop. This is what corp's use when they aren't going vpn crazy, and it seems to work fairly well in my experience. This is also what makes citrix not suck, and is critical for nomachine to implement.
The next is central management of servers to a finer degree. Realtime failover, process monitoring, and user shadowing to name a few. I think with something webmin-like it should be very possible to implement on a standard browser. Citrix uses some java based, or in the newer versions, VB based server control app. And that just is not portable and is slow and therefore is the suck of ass.
So, a couple of things for nomachine or even the GPL'd freenx could work on in the near future. If not, get used to $12,000 for 20 user licensing fees and a profitable(for now) company contending with Microsoft as their mortal enemy. MS is everyone's mortal enemy- but they can't kill GPL'd software.. so I'm rooting for NX. I don't like building shit with a 5 year lifespan. Call me Amish or provincial. 1000 years or bust.
