You're right, we need a new algorithm from the ground up, but we're gonna have to wait for that. SHA512 is abominably slow, like 25% the speed of SHA256. We are really looking for a balance here between acceptible security and tolerable performance. Lots of algorithms offer one or the other but not many of them have a good balance of both.
