use ssh configured to require certificates on a wierd port. You get whatever security SSH offers plus you don't have to worry about the brain dead brute forcers consuming resources. Obscurity does buy you some aditional space, but only if you have it combined with real security. From what I understand, this is the concept the parent was trying to endorse.
