I look at debian as an organization / distro that really works hard at ensuring that the software remains truely open and free. It's important that at least ONE "major" distro do this.
RedHat (and suse and others) on the other hand is in a totally different situation and serves a different market. They have a need to adjust their view on free software to meet the needs of their corporate customers.
Gentoo serves the needs of yet a third market.
The Linux world really does need multiple different distributions to encompass the varied needs of differing types of users around the world.
