Debian & FSF

Posted by: Anonymous Coward on January 26, 2006 02:54 AM
As a FSF member and a Debian user and supporter, I want to note that there is no need to oppose the FSF and Debian.

First, any intellectual monopoly of any kind is undesirable. Second, the Debian project and the FSF have somewhat different goals which are sometimes reflected in different perceptions and priorities. But they both work towards the exact same goal: our individual freedoms. In fact, the fact is that the GPL3 has received very useful contributions from the Debian community. Third, Debian and the FSF *need each other* very much in particular at a time when the core values which made GNU/Linux possible are all to often forgotten, overlooked or even ridiculed by the "corporate linux" crowd.

I strongly believe that the FSF and Debian represent the absolute best and most important (by far!) entities in our community and they should be encouraged to work together while keeping their goals and methods separate.

I encourage everybody to help the FSF and Debian in any way they can
