Low Throughput?

The throughput reported by your FTP client excludes the overheads of the lower layers, such as IP, MAC and Ethernet and WiFi. All these will cause your eventual throughput to be much lesser than 54Mbps.



Also, these 802.11 devices are operating in DCF mode, i.e. CSMA/CA based. Thus, the presence of other 802.11 nodes that are not part of your network but running at the same frequency channel will increase your wireless network collisions and leads to a reduced throughput.
