Err - there's more to life than openldap...

If you are serious about ldap for more than a few hundred users, you should be looking at something other than openldap.

Redhat have the fedora directory server (free, oss) and Sun have their free (as in beer) ds.

Openldap just isn't reliable enough for large scale use.
