i got the same experience as well with my 800++ users. somehow sometime the database got corrupted!
will get fedora/sun ds a try<nobr> <wbr></nobr>:)
and for administration, i would suggest phpldapadmin - <a href="http://phpldapadmin.sourceforge.net/" title="sourceforge.net">http://phpldapadmin.sourceforge.net/</a sourceforge.net>
