If you want any manager to take your view seriously, stop using pejorative terms. Speak properly. "Active Directory" is no swear word. Point its weaknesses, elaborate on the strong points of OpenLDAP with respect for all the other players. This is what in the end will make the difference. Otherwise, managers will think, 'o well, on the one hand we have MS, on the other hand just a bunch of kids who cannot even speak properly'. Guess what product they will choose.
OpenLDAP is not really hard to implement if you read the fine manual. It is far from the ease of configuration of AD. Plus, you do not need to understand how ldap servers work to get AD working, but you will need to understand them as soon as you run into problems with it (and believe me, you will sooner or later).
