I'm not a hard-core hacker, but I respect those who are and who can make a system that 1.) is Free Software, 2.) makes them money, and 3.) helps schools actually teach kids. Item #3 refers to their helping Eric Harrison create K12LTSP, originally based on Red Hat Linux (now Fedora Core and CentOS). This system has allowed several schools to equip their student computer labs, and the students themselves, with modern, ethical, and solid technology, and to do so without breaking the bank.
Red Hat has taken a lot of criticism over the years, from both corporations and individuals, for what I believe are unjustified reasons (RH is proprietary, they are "dissing" the community through RHEL, etc.). This is hogwash. Pretty much everything RH creates is GPL, including the up2date software and RH/Fedora Directory Server. They are, and always have been, major funders of GNOME (more Free Software). They've always been a part of the Free Software community, even if they do prefer the term "open source" these days.
Red Hat may or may not deserve criticism at times if they do something weird, and certainly so if ever they do something destructive. But they've not done that. I'm an educator; they are directly benefiting me, and one of my schools, right now, and I have their support of the K12LTSP project to thank for that.
Thank you, Red Hat, for what you do
