Aside from reverse engineering issues, what the Linux USB scene really needs is some more development on libusb itself, providing that isochronous transfer capability which has floated around as various patches for the past two years. Having webcam drivers in the kernel, along with the associated hard lock-ups when the device isn't quite working perfectly, is pretty much unacceptable; removing the apparent need to put them there (because of the access to isochronous transfers via the kernel APIs) would make such deployment inexcusable, too.
