Most distros nowadays have a version of VNC bundled in them. It gives a persistent X server and can hold graphical state between sessions as well as be shared among more than one user. It does run a bit slower than screen, but much faster than remotely exporting an X session and allows for the same lexibility, as well as multiple terminals in view at same time.
