Lout ( <a href="http://lout.sourceforge.net/" title="sourceforge.net">http://lout.sourceforge.net/</a sourceforge.net> ) is a good alternative to Tex and LaTex. It has clear syntax, and its style files are more easily modified. It is very functional and stable right now, but is also still under development so new features can be added. I have used it for numerous applications (PhD thesis, papers, figures, posters) and I have been very happy with it.
