You can have your cake, and eat it too - see DVD-Jon or iPod-Jon latest tools to free music from Apple's store.
My wife got really mad when she had bought music online - the format was not prominently displayed - WMF-format this time - and her newly bought cell phone/MP3 player was unable to play it. She is no techy, why should she have to put up with such crap? The industry should get its act together.
