It is really not too hard to write a program which will walk a machine's disks and renumber file user and group IDs to a consistent naming scheme. I was at a university where this was done during planned maintenance a number of years ago. This would be an essential prerequisite to using most directory schemes. After the changes, a consistent set of passwd and group files is installed: this information migrates to the directory service later.
