I am a Linux-Mandrake user who made the migration from Windows. I did it with the support of one or two friends and very little else. When I execute a Mandrake install, I have roughly 4,000 choices available to me. Naming a significant number of those choices is impossible in a short article, so lets simply note the author of the Migration article could have made better choices.
When I install a Mandrake server to replace or support a Windows network, the OS provides a front end that looks like Windows to Windows users (no retraining issues!). To me this is the crux of the issue. I can keep Windows users happy by selecting products that have a familiar flavour, and yet provide a more robust backend. This has proven very cost effective and requires few if any hardware changes.
I have no quarrel with Apple. It would not have lasted as long as it has unless it was an exceptional product line. That said, a well-planned and executed migration to Linux has enough benefits to make even Mac users look twice.
Re:Ahem. Apple's already there.
